The Ishpeming Public Schools requested a 2.95- millage increase but it was defeated by voters in the election held on May 4th. This millage would of raised 11.2 million dollars to make an addition to Birchview Elementary School. This would include the closing of C.L. Phelps Middle School. However the plans were defeated by a vote of 756-579. Superintendent Stephen Piereson said he was "extremely disappointed" that voters turned down the millage proposal and somewhat surprised at the large margin of votes.
