National Ski Hall of Fame

National Ski Hall of Fame

The U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum is located in Ishpeming, Michigan on U.S. 41 near the shores of Lake Superior. About a century ago, a group of local businessmen and skiing enthusiasts took the first steps to organize the National Skiing Association.

The Ishpeming Ski Club was organized in 1887, and is one of the oldest continually active ski clubs in the United States. On February 21, 1905, the ski club organized the National Ski Association which is now called the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association. Ishpeming is known as the "birthplace of organized skiing in America."

In 1953, the Ski Hall of Fame was housed in its first building into 1992, when it was moved to its present location, a building over five times as large as the original. The roof of the building now resembles a ski jump. The sport of skiing was introduced to America in the 19th century by Scandinavian immigrants. It held its first public ski meet on Feb. 25, 1888. The longest jump was 35 feet. Since then the city has produced many famous ski jumpers who have gained their experience on Suicide Hill in Ishpeming.

The National Ski Hall of Fame and Museum is located here because of Ishpeming's historic role in developing skiing in America. Its Honor Roll of 349 Honored members reflects the richness and diversity of American skiing from the early pioneer ski jumpers to today's stars like Tommy Moe, Picabo Street, and Jonny Mosely.
